Kogi Election: How Primate Ayodele Foretold APC’s Victory, SDP’s Surprising Performance (VIDEO)

Among the off-cycle elections that were held in Nigeria over the weekend, the Kogi governorship election appears to be the most surprising based on the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Before now, the election in the state has always been between the All Progressive Congress and People Democratic Party (PDP); the APC have always come first while the PDP comes second but this time around, a surprising twist took place.

In the result declared, APC came first as usual but PDP was replaced by the social democratic party (SDP) in second position. PDP came third dishonourably because the difference between the party and SDP is far above 150,000 votes.

In several years, it has not happened in this manner and was not expected this year because PDP’s candidate, Dino Melaye is quite popular and was very visible during the campaign period.

However, all that happened in the election had been foretold by Nigerian prophet, Primate Elijah Ayodele before the election.

Primate Ayodele had always maintained that if the opposition wants to win the election, they should come together to support one candidate. Last month, He warned APC to be on alert as he foresees the SDP putting up a very big fight. He mentioned that SDP must not be underestimated while stating that PDP will have a confusion arrangement.

‘’In Kogi state, APC must not sleep because the SDP will give the party a very big fight. SDP is ready with every mercenary in Kogi state. SDP must not be underestimated. PDP will have a confusion arrangement. They must not overlook SDP….’’

Some few days before the election also, Primate Ayodele made another statement mentioning that the election in Kogi state will be tough and that APC will win but the SDP candidate will be a factor in the election.

He stated that the PDP will not do anything serious in the election and that the opposition will not win but the candidate of SDP will make the election tough. He revealed that results will not be counted in some areas if care isn’t taken. He concluded by saying APC will win the election no matter how the margin is.

These were his words

‘’The election in Kogi state is between APC and SDP. Ajaka will fight a serious battle with the incumbent. Oppositions will fail in the state because they didn’t do coalition, they are all selfish, if not, coalition would unseat the ruling party but they all want to be in power at the same time. I am not seeing what PDP will do in the election but SDP will make it a fight to finish. The election will be serious and if care isn’t taken, they won’t count results in some areas. The election in Kogi will be for APC no matter how the margin is, it will be a tug of war...’’

As Primate Ayodele said, APC won the election though not by a landslide because of the efforts of the SDP candidate. Many didn’t believe SDP would make any serious impact in the election but as the man of God foretold, the SPD candidate turned out to be a ‘factor’ in the election. The PDP on the other hand fell badly in this election with a token of 46,362 votes. SDP got 259,052 while APC got 446,237 votes.

Sanwo-Olu Is A Liar – Rowland Okorie

Chief Executive Officer of Equity Concepts Entertainment, Rowland Okorie, has in recent times been speaking on his dissatisfaction with Nigerian leaders.

Okorie, in a statement he issued on Thursday, April 6th, 2023, took a swipe at the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, calling him a liar and a tribalistic leader.

He said; “Some leaders are not just living by example, they are full of deceit. Most times they easily walk away due to people around them being a sycophant. Whenever I listens to Yoruba elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo I see a different kind of leader who understands the position Nigeria should be headed.”

“The Governor of Lagos State has not demonstrated that he is a true Nigerian. He is everything he talked against in his recent speech, no content of unity. Listening to his speech this morning was a disgrace, it shows he has no respect for the unity of the country.”

“It hurts my stomach and makes me sick. I call it the worst and most dangerous divisive speech I have ever listened to post election in modern Nigerian history. It was full of hate and anger, lies, deceit and most dangerously provocative. It was provocative even to his audience  because they know he is a lying governor all the time he opens his mouth.”

Obasa Assures Sanwo-Olu of Support on Infrastructure, Transport Sector Developments

The Lagos State House of Assembly will continue to support Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the area of infrastructural and transport sector developments in the state, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has said.

Dr. Obasa gave the assurance during the commissioning of the Oyingbo Bridge on Sunday.

The Speaker, represented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Transport, Hon. Adewale Adedeji Temitope OON, noted: "We have the transport sector reform law which we did. We have the Lagos State Transport Masterplan which is in place and now, we are here again today having the THEME+ agenda."

He commended the governor for living up to the expectations of the people of the state and for fulfilling his electioneering campaign promises.

"Today we are happy because we are standing at this historic event where Mr. Governor has said that the needs and responsibilities of the people shall continue to be his priority and he has given us the opportunity. Today, we are opening a bus terminal and we are commissioning a bridge.

"Your political scorecard has said it all. Your promises to the people as a politician and as the executive governor are coming to pass. I want to continue to tell you that as long as you continue to do what is right for the people, the Lagos House of Assembly will continue to stand with and by you.

"Just last week, we commissioned the Yaba Bridge and today, we are here commissioning the Oyingbo Bridge. I know we still have the Mushin and Ikeja bridges. We have train stations that have been completed and yet to be commissioned," Dr. Obasa said.

In the same vein, Hon. Adewale said when he was appointed chairman of the committee on transport, he was worried about the transportation challenges in the state, adding that he got more worried when the governor made transportation a priority in his THEME+ agenda.

"Mr. Governor, history will be kind to you. On behalf of the good people of Lagos State, I promise that Mr. Speaker will continue to stand by you for every need on infrastructure development and the transport sector," he said.

The lawmaker used the opportunity to appeal to the governor for the construction of a bridge in Ifako-Ijaiye to ease traffic bottlenecks in the area.

"Mr. Governor, I'm jealous because I understand that there are supposed to be seven bridges and I know that four have been constructed. I also understand that one of the local governments that is supposed to benefit from the bridges is Ifako-Ijaiye where I represent and that is the Iju/Fagba Bridge.

"Compensations have been paid but we have not seen any bridge. Mr. Governor, I would like to talk to you about that,” Adewale said.

Primate Ayodele’s Football Revelations: Prophecies Or Predictions? By Ejalonibu Samuel

Prophecies are not predictions; Predictions are not prophecies though they both have to do with foretelling or forecasting events to come. They are closely related but are not the same as some feel they are.

Anyone can make a prediction but not everyone can prophesy except a prophet ordained by God. Predictions may come to pass and they may not come to pass. Predictions are made based on the situation on ground and there is no guarantee that it will be correct at the end of the day. Prophecies on the other hand are sure to be fulfilled because they are God’s divine revelations, they are shared when there is no situation that looks like the prophecies; this is why a prophecy sometimes comes to pass 10 years after it was shared.

Predictions are majorly direct statements; a prediction will only tell you what will happen while prophecies will tell you what will happen, when it will happen, why it will happen, how it will happen and what to do to prevent it in case it’s negative.

Prophecies and predictions sound related but the difference between the two subjects is too wide for them to be used interchangeably or compared.

Predictions are very rampant in sporting activities especially football because there are many stakeholders who earn a living by foretelling the outcome of football matches, we have punters that try their luck to predict winners and losers of football games; if their predictions come to pass, they make money and if otherwise, they lose money. However, there was uproar over the weekend when the video of a certain Nigerian man of God, Primate Ayodele speaking about the outcome of Manchester City VS Bournemouth, Liverpool VS Luton town went viral. In the video, Primate Ayodele mentioned the amount of goals that will be conceded in the matches.

Although, the prophet is known for always talking about every sector including education, government, corporate bodies, religion, traditional rulers, sports, etc. He has done that for over 25 years but this particular video took people by surprise and many wondered if Primate Ayodele who is known for prophecies has deviated into making predictions.

Going down the memory lane, it would be recalled that Primate Ayodele went viral also during the last season when he spoke about the fate of Chelsea FC. In a video that was published by thousands of media platforms, the prophet stated that Chelsea FC is finished and that no amount of players will be able to save the club except the club goes back to the former owner, Roman Abramovich and seek his blessings. Let’s note that he highlighted the problems and gave solutions to Chelsea FC.

During the last Champions League which Real Madrid won, Primate Ayodele shared in a video before the tournament got to the round of 16 that the winner will be between four teams namely Manchester City, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.

Before the Semi-finals which were played between Real Madrid VS Manchester City and AC Milan VS Inter Milan, Primate Ayodele shared that whoever wins between the former will win the cup. He continued by revealing how both clubs can take advantage of some minutes in the match.

“Honestly, anyone who wins between Manchester City and Real Madrid will win the cup. If you ask me who will win between them, I will say Madrid has all it takes in the first half, 56 minutes, 78 minutes, and 85 minutes. Madrid has all it takes to win but if they take Man City for granted in the first leg, it will be a serious thing.’’

In the end, Manchester City won the cup. We should also note that Primate Ayodele didn’t just say who will win the cup, he mentioned clubs that have chances and three of them got to the Semi-final. He mentioned how clubs can take advantage of specific time to win, he revealed how the winner will emerge without any ambiguity.

In the same vein, during the last world cup which Argentina won, Primate Ayodele revealed at the beginning some players that won’t shine at the world cup. Among them was Cristiano Ronaldo and we all know what happened to Portugal at the world cup. Following the same pattern when he spoke about the winner of the cup, Primate Ayodele stated that victory is for Argentina and further explained that Messi has between 30-70 minutes to act well. Argentina won the match against France despite the latter having an edge over the former due to the sophisticated players available.

We should also note that he didn’t just say Argentina will win, he spoke about how they will win. The mention of some players that won’t shine at the world cup is also something very unusual in football predictions.

There are several other instances where Primate Ayodele has spoken extensively about football matches, football players, football clubs and apart from football, he speaks about other sports including boxing, basketball, wrestling, to mention but a few.

It is quite marvelous that these revelations come to pass exactly the way Primate Ayodele says them. The world cup, Champions league, Chelsea FC that were cited above are proof that the words of the prophet concerning football don’t go without coming to pass.

Therefore, based on the explanation of what prophecies and predictions are, we would be totally on point to categorically say that Primate Ayodele’s football revelations are 100% prophecies, not predictions.

However, the arguments on whether or not it is right for a man of God to prophesy about sports will be discussed in subsequent articles.

Till then, I remain Ejalonibu Samuel and I write from Lagos

Giving Is Living, That's Why We Care Much About Less Privileged At Omogbolake Foundation- Labake Adeneye

For Omolabake Adeneye it is not about living a frivolous lifestyle, spending at parties to impress people. One thing that has remained her priority is putting smiles on the faces of the needy. On  weekly basis Omolabake gives thousands of naira to her numerous followers on social media and this has endeared her into the hearts of the beneficiaries irrespective of tribes.

"Giving is living is my slogan, that's why I decided to continue where my mother stopped." Omolabake said.

Omogbolake Foundation which has now become an household name didn't just start overnight and the name was coined putting her mother and her own names together. Her  interest is to ensure the less privileged also have the lives of their own.

Just recently, the UK based female entrepreneur and philanthropist gathered over 200 widows as she doled out different gift items, foodstuffs and offer financial assistance. It was a day to remember for the widows in attendance.

When asked if she's doing it for any reason, she explained how her late mother lived all her life caring for humanity.

"It's a pity mummy could not fulfill her destiny. My mother lived all her life giving to the needy, I must be sincere here that I took after her. I look at this world and agree with the proverb that life is vanity. What's the essence of that affluence and wealth you acquire when many people out there are suffering. I can't  live to see a fellow human being looking for what to eat when my three square meals are available even with extras. Maybe that's how God made me to be. I'm not a millionaire, not even up to children of an average Nigerian politician but I'm always heartbroken seeing people suffering.

However, it's going to be a December to Remember again as Omogbolake Foundation is ready to pamper people in hundreds especially the needy .

"We shall be visiting some motherless homes in Lagos and its environs and we are planning to extend this gestures to other parts of the country very soon, our goal is to build a brighter future together."

Omogbolake Foundation started some years ago as an humanitarian organisation with the soul aim of putting smiles on the faces of the needy. In 2021, the charitable organisation was honoured by Africa Leadership Philanthrophy Awards as The Most Outstanding Humanitarian Organisation, Women Affairs. Also in 2022/2023 edition of Toplotech Prominent Personalities & Organisation Award, Omogbolake Foundation for its love and support for humanity was awarded Most Prominent Charitable Organisation.

However, the Founder/ Chairperson Omolabake Adeneye who's fondly called Labby by her close friends has appealed to the Federal Government, individuals and organisations "to render their  supports by contributing to our donation drive.

"Your generosity will provide essential resources, improve facilities and create a nurturing environment for young minds to thrive," she concluded.

Plan is underway to provide school bags, books, writing materials, mathematical sets etc for students this November at Ojodu Primary School.

Tourism Icon, Wanle Akinboboye Releases ‘Corporate African Eco Retreat’ As 4th Tourism Product

Otunba Wanle Akinboboye ‘Corporate African Eco Retreat‘ (CAER) is here! It is Tourism Icon, Wanle Akinboboye’s 4th Tourism Product in the planned 52 new Tourism products to activate the local and international tourism industry. In releasing this week’s Tourism product, Corporate African Eco Retreat, CAER, Tourism Icon, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye has raised the bar, calling out the private and the public sectors into full involvement in tourism. “This week, we will be leveraging our culture especially as it concerns Corporate Nigeria or Corporate Africa,” said Akinboboye. “Our culture has been relegated to the background especially in Corporate Nigeria. It seems the more our nation grows, the more expanded we are in foreign culture. The way we dress, and where we spend money. “They go as far as China, Dubai Europe for retreat, to announce that you have arrived . But that comes at a huge cost! You can imagine the cost of tickets alone. Government officials prefer to hold their retreat outside the country, so they can collect estacode. So they go to concrete jungles abroad to hold their retreats. We have created ‘Corporate African Eco Retreat’ (CAER) to incorporate the African culture into retreats and bonding exercises.
We will rather they bond with their culture in an eco friendly environment. As most eco resorts are in the local governments areas where majority of the poverty stricken people reside. We bring these corporate people to connect with them as they hold their retreats, creating an opportunity for them to transfer wealth. “In the past, we have had some well meaning people at retreats sponsored different categories of staff to higher education as a sort of corporate social responsibility. Without Corporate African Eco Retreat, the connection would not have been made. Akinboboye, the Tourism Icon further highlighted the importance of CAER to global warming. “When we make our natural eco system profitable then we will be able to preserve it. The preservation of our eco system, will minimise global warming. “The biggest advantage we have in Nigeria at the moment now is our 774 local governments, that is rich in nature and culture. If countryside resorts are cited in our local government areas generating revenue that is keeping the local government abreast, there will be no need to mull it down. “And these are the two major ingredients that Corporate African Eco Retreat presents, offering executives an opportunity to get away from their regular environment.

A retreat is a special opportunity for people to get away from their immediate environment, so they can come up with fresh ideas. Not move from their original environment to another cheap imitation of the same environment. that they are coming from, an environment they are trying to run away from. These are some of the benefits from this tourism product. Entrepreneurs can benefit by being part of packaging executive retreats, and get-aways, by partnering with our resort. “Partner with CAER and prosper,” Akinboboye added.

Fact-Checking the story: Polaris Bank loses N26bn loans granted to 6 ex-directors without collaterals By Olalere Ojedokun

A report being syndicated by a section of online media with the title: Polaris Bank loses N26bn loans granted to 6 ex-directors without collaterals, made several claims in figures, interpretations and practices.

Claim 1. POLARIS Bank has lost N26.005 billion worth of loans granted to 6 ex-directors, mostly without collaterals

This claim is untrue, founded primarily on lack of understanding of accounting principles and convenient disregard of the denotative dates and notes to the accounts. The story was based on the audited accounts and report for the year ended December 31, 2022. The report was approved on March 20, 2023. In line with the general comparative and accrual reportage format, the bank presented the status report for the preceding year ended December 31, 2021 and the reporting year ended December 31, 2022. The two comparative tables were clearly marked and were also evidently seen by the writer of the story. While the 2021 insider credit status report listed eight directors with total outstanding loans of N25.827 billion, the reporting year 2022 status report updated that four directors had fully liquidated their loans, a director had partially liquidated her loan while two directors had seen increase in outstandings against their names. The 2022 status report indicated a total of N31.646 billion insider credits related to the four remaining former directors. The 2022 report clearly indicated that Abimbola Izu, Dotun Adeniyi, Tokunbo Abiru and Theodora Onwughalu had paid their loans and as such, were not listed in 2022.

The 2022 report was clearly indicative of the changes and the compliance of the bank with the Prudential Guidelines and Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA). A former director, with related interest in Newcross Exploration and Production, Jason Fadeyi, whose loan of N25.442 billion in 2021 accounted for 98.5 per cent of the total outstanding insider credits in 2021, saw his total outstanding loan rising to N30.922 billion in 2022, ostensibly due to accrued interests and increase due to foreign exchange (forex) conversion rate as the loan is a foreign currency (US Dollar)-denominated loan. It’s a simple understanding that forex rate is a mediating factor in foreign currency denominated loan. The closing forex rates were generally available on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s website. The Naira/US Dollar rate was N424.11 per US$ for the year ended December 31, 2021 and N461.1 per US$ for 2022. It was N400.33 per US$ in 2020. All these partially accounted for the year-on-year change in the loan. Meanwhile, Newcross Exploration/Fadeyi’s N30.922 billion accounted for 97.7 per cent of total outstanding insider credits in 2022.

Interestingly, as rightly reported by the story, this loan, N30.922 billion, has a perfected collateral, a debenture of the assets of the company. A further check indicated that Newcross Exploration/Fadeyi’s loan is a syndicated facility by eight banks with the FBN Trustees as the trustee managing the collateral on behalf of all the lenders. Jason Fadeyi was cited for the loan under the general principles of insiders which regard family members, relatives and associates as insiders. As rightly pointed out by the story, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)’s records showed that Newcross Exploration and Production was registered on July 9, 2013, with Festus Fadeyi and Bolaji Ogundare as persons with significant control of the company.

The second major insider credit in 2022 report was a N535 million loan credited to Mr. Tunde Ayeni, about 1.7 per cent of the total loans. This was classified as “performing”. Altogether, the collaterised, syndicated loan of Newcross Exploration/Fadeyi and “performing” loan of Ayeni accounted for about 99.4 per cent of total outstanding insider credits in 2022. All these were clearly stated and evident in the table which the reporter accessed, but failed due to poor interpretations and understanding of reportage format.

Claim 2: As of December 31, 2022, total outstanding loans owed by these ex-directors of Polaris Bank, some of which would not be repaid, amounted to N57.473 billion.

This claim is untrue, and flowing from the first claim, it exposed the poor understanding of the comparative reporting (going-concern) basis. To arrive at its claim of N57.473 billion, the reporter simply added the total outstanding insider credits in 2021 of N25.442 billion to total outstanding insider credits in 2022 of N31.646 billion. The reporter conveniently ignored the differential in year ending and the fact that the two tables, like other segments of the annual reports and accounts, were provided for comparative reporting. The reporter ignored the indicative narration showing that the Newcross Exploration/Fadeyi’s loan was same loan, moving from a reporting year to another reporting year. By implication, the story increased Newcross Exploration/Fadeyi’s loan to N56.364 billion, 98.1 per cent of its claimed total outstanding loans of N57.473 billion.

Further check of post-year end events, which are usually indicated in updates to accounts after year-end but prior to board’s final approval and signing off of the accounts, indicated that Demanta/Ibiye Ekong’s N89 million outstanding loan was fully paid off in February 2023. In essence, the only director-related insider loan outstanding is former Managing Director Timothy Oguntayo’s N100 million, which is a subject of reconciliation between the tripartite of employee, employer and regulator. As noted by the story, Oguntayo “who was earlier charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but later exonerated”, had no misconduct established against him. As noted earlier, the Newcross Exploration/Fadeyi’s loan is a syndicated facility by eight banks with the FBN Trustees as the trustee managing the collateral on behalf of all the lenders. CBN’s Prudential Guidelines states that “For syndicated facilities, the classification shall be the same across all banks involved in the syndication. Thus, the worst classification by any of the banks involved in the syndication shall apply across board”.

Claim 3: Abimbola Izu, another ex-director, got N103 million mortgage loan from Polaris Bank but did not repay it, according to bank records. Her collateral perfection status was also recorded as “not applicable.” Bank records also showed that Izu took a term loan of N17 million with another “not applicable” collateral status.

This claim is untrue. The 2022 audited report, on which the story was based, showed that Izu was not indebted to the bank, having liquidated the prior year’s status report.

Claim 4: Fadeyi borrowed another N30.922 billion term loan from the bank – which has been placed on the watchlist.

This claim is false. It emanated from the poor understanding of the comparative reporting (accrual, going concern), basis. This claim particularly undercut the credibility of the entire story, obviously showing the reporter had no training or understanding of financial reporting/journalism. This also subjects the story to motive analysis as the reporter failed to adhere to a pattern of errors, rather zigzagging across erroneous claims to arrive at unsubstantiated claims. For instance, while doubling up Fadeyi’s, the story kept Oguntayo’s N100 million loan unchanged over the comparative years, but curiously reported Ekong’s loan as N89 million (2022 year-end outstanding) and N4 million, N4 million (two loans in 2021). Whereas, the 2021 report showed that Ekong owed a total of N108 million (N100 million by Demanta, N4 million, N4million), and by 2022, these reduced to N89 million, having liquidated the two N4 million, N4 million personal loans and reducing the N100 million related loan to Demanta to N89 million. A pattern of error would have simply added Ekong’s related loans of N108 million in 2021 with N89 million in 2022 to arrive at a false premise like Fadeyi’s. The story, cherry-picking of figures, simply reported N89 million while adding the two personal loans of N4 million each for Ekong as latest reporting year status.

Claim 5: Based on Polaris Bank’s records, Ibiyi Ekong of Demanta Nigeria Limited is another ex-director who took loans from the bank without repaying them. Ekong, a former executive director of the bank who resigned in 2016, owes the bank N89 million. Ekong also owes the bank N4 million borrowed as a mortgage loan and another N4 million taken as an auto loan, which was not repaid.

This claim is untrue. As explained above, the reporter engaged in convenient cherry-picking of figures, due to poor financial journalism background and lack of fidelity, even in its erroneous claims. While its claims based on the reporting year ended December 31, 2022 were false, post-reporting events showed that Demanta, which was the only Ekong-related insider credit outstanding in 2022, had been paid by February 2023, prior to the signing and final approval of the account in March 2023. The story: Polaris Bank loses N26bn loans granted to 6 ex-directors without collaterals, was first reported by one EconomyPost in October 27, 2023 and was reposted by one International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) Nigeria on October 31, 2023. There were clearly other reporting periods that the writer could have sought updates on the post-year-end changes.

Claim 6: Theodora Amaka Onwughalu is another ex-director who borrowed N19 million mortgage loan from Polaris Bank but did not pay it back.

This claim is false. The 2022 reporting year status indicated Onwughalu was not indebted to the bank. Her total indebtedness of N19 million in 2021 had been paid by 2022.

Claim 7: Similarly, Dotun Adeniyi, an ex-director of Polaris Bank, borrowed N27 million mortgage loan from the financial institution but did not repay it.

This claim is false. The 2022 reporting year status indicated Adeniyi was not indebted to the bank. His total indebtedness of N27 million in 2021 had been paid by 2022.

Claim 8: Tokunbo Abiru, now a Lagos senator, was appointed the managing director of the then Skye Bank in 2016 but resigned in 2020 to fulfil his political ambition.

In its cherry-picking and convenient disregard for facts and figures, the story while narrating the Abiru’s relationship, ignored that the 2021 report indicated that Abiru, as an ex-director, had a related (taken by a company related under insiders’ principles) “performing” loan of N9 million in 2021 reporting year, which had been paid off by the 2022 reporting year.

Claim 9: Collateralisation of loans

The story sensationally placed “without collaterals” and ran under this theme alongside its cherry-picking of figures to portray an image of unusual, untoward or underhand transactions. Beside ignoring the fact that 98.5 per cent of the total outstanding insider-related credits in 2021 and 97.7 per cent of 2022’s report had a perfected collateral, and also 1.7 per cent of the 2022’s credit status was “performing”- altogether collateralized/performing status of 99.4 per cent in 2022; the story conveniently ignored the global banking practice, and as applicable in Nigeria as well, that secured and unsecured loans are typical in banks’ loan books. The credit risk assessment and banking rules allow banks to beyond collaterals, approve and grant loans to some extent (depending on each internal guidelines), based on subjective assessments. This is a generally available information and one of the basics in financial journalism classes. Loans, in terms of security, are generally divided into two- secured loans (with collaterals) and unsecured loans (without collaterals). The secured loans are so called because of the presence of a collateral, a physical asset that backed up the loan, which the lender has the right to take in the case of default. Unsecured loan is so called because of absence of physical asset, but in the reality of credit risk assessment and recovery, it’s secured by personal goodwill and standing, a case-by-case subjective assessment of a customer’s credit worthiness and the size of the loan. In any case, the lender has the option of recourse to court to enforce recovery of “unsecured loan”, in the event of a default.

In a February 24, 2022 report titled “Here are banks that offer loans without collateral”, Business Day (businessday.ng), a leading business and economy daily, reported increased demand for “unsecured lending” among Nigerian Deposit Money Banks (DMBs). The newspaper reported that “as seen in the latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), demand for unsecured lending has been on the rise but lower than the demand in the pre-COVID-19 years”. The story listed not less than eight banks that were offering “loans without collateral” to the general public, including Nigeria’s four largest banks. In recognition of its status as acceptable banking/lending practice, the BOFIA included provisions guiding unsecured lending.

Claim 10: Insiders

The story ran a villainous theme of undue characterization of insiders’ transactions in banks, either out of poor understanding or its convenient disregard of practice or both. Both BOFIA and CBN’s Prudential Guidelines make provisions for insider-related transactions, premised on the understanding that excluding significant stakeholders in a company’s business may be tantamount to undermining same company. Prudential Guidelines define insiders to include “directors, significant shareholders, employees and investee companies (such as associates, subsidiaries, joint ventures) of banks, and other entities in which they have significant control”. In line with the BOFIA, the term “director” includes director’s wife, husband, father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter and their spouses. A significant shareholder is regarded as someone holding at least 5.0 per cent ((individually or in aggregate) of a bank’s equity. The CBN requires that “Director, insider and significant shareholder credit exposure shall be fully disclosed by banks in their financial statements and returns prescribed by the Central Bank of Nigeria”. It also required banks to “ensure that their credit policies specifically address lending to directors as part of related parties or insiders lending policies”. In treating insiders’ loans, BOFIA states that a bank shall not lend “more than five per cent of its paid-up capital to any of its directors or significant shareholders provided that the aggregate of the bank’s exposure to all its directors and significant shareholders does not exceed 10 per cent of its paid up share capital or such percentage as the Bank (CBN) may prescribe”.  Polaris Bank neither violates any principles in lending to directors nor the limits prescribed by the laws.

Claim 11: Classification of loans

The story sensationally ran the denotative classification of the loans as “lost”, implying that such classification meant that “it was not recovered by the bank” or not going to be paid back. In fact, its headline of “lost”, was casted on this wrong premise of understanding of classification of loans and the recoverable status. Classification of loans are guided by stipulated timelines by the CBN Prudential Guidelines and the terms associated with this classification are credit risk management references, not absolute ordinary meanings.

The CBN Prudential Guidelines state that a credit facility should be deemed as non-performing when interest or principal is due and unpaid for 90 days or more. The guidelines indicate that a loan can be substandard, doubtful or lost. A loan is subs-standard when unpaid principal or interest remain outstanding for more than 90 days but less than 180 days.

A loan is classified as doubtful when unpaid principal or interest remain outstanding for at least 180 days but less than 360 days. A loan is classified as lost when unpaid principal and or interest remain outstanding for 360 days or more. The CBN Prudential Guidelines state that for a facility granted to an “insider or related party credit”, which had been fully provided for, to be written off, “the approval of CBN is required”. This provision is higher than requirement for writing off provisioned lost loans by non-insider.

Motive analysis and convenient infidelity to facts

A general review of the story subjects the reporter to “motive analysis”, especially with its convenient infidelity to facts and figures and many “patterns of errors”. Was the report a targeted blackmail working to achieve a predetermined notion of characterization, rather than a professional analysis of financial report? Was the story in pattern of poor-taste, grant-chasing reports by a section of media seeking to demonise entities to secure funding? It was clear the reporter carefully “shuffled” facts and provided no basis for far-reaching assumptions and claims. While the reporter was copiously referring to unrelated businesses and current positions of the former directors, it failed to make similar efforts to reach out to the affected directors in the spirit of fair reporting.

Ethics

The report failed the ethical test, especially in the light of the “statement of principles” of both Economy Post and ICIR. Economy Post, set up in 2023, aims to promote responsible journalism that is fair, just and free from external corporate and political influences. The ICIR seeks to be an independent, non-profit news agency that promotes transparency and accountability through robust and objective investigative reporting. ICIR, particularly, failed to fact-check the report and its wholesale adoption of the story belied the enviable reputation of its board of trustees. Fairness, fact-checking and corrections are cardinal operating principles of ICIR reportage.  ICIR commits: “We will take utmost care to be fair to all subjects in news stories. All sides of a story must have their say. Fairness is a cardinal requirement in Journalism, more so investigative reporting. If anybody is involved in anything that appears negative or unseemly, an extra effort must be made to get his own side of the story. If any such person declines comment, it should be so stated.

“Also, facts must be accurately presented. Facts are sacred. In dealing with sources, document, databases and the Internet, it is not enough to quote the information gotten correctly, an effort must be made to establish its accuracy. Where possible, cross check your facts again and again using different sources.

“The ICIR is committed to the principle of fairness and accuracy. Therefore, when we make a mistake, we will promptly correct it. If the correction is significant, we will explain the change and the reason for it. In addition, if there is an update to the story, we will provide clarification. And if the entire report is open to question or fails to meet our ethical standard, we will provide clarification signed by the editor”. With all these, it will be fair to expect ICIR to correct its mistake in reposting the misleading story, given numerous factual, operational and textual errors cited above. The story is below par and unseemly to the avowed ideals of ICIR.

In conclusion, the story “Polaris Bank loses N26bn loans granted to 6 ex-directors without collaterals” is erroneous and misleading, the bank has lost no money to ex-directors’ loans, as inappropriately claimed by the publication.

Buratai Commends Tinubu’s Bold Measures to Strengthen Public Service

The forrmer Chief of Army Staff,.Lt General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, CFR has applauded the bold measures of  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen public service. Buratai affirmed that the president is poised to implement innovative and bold measures to make public service more efficient and accountable.

Buratai said this while presenting a paper entitled Public Service and the Imperative for National Security In Nigeria at the University of Ibadan Alumni Association public lecture 2023 held at the Alumni center on Friday.

He said: “As an objective political observer of political developments in our country, I strongly believe that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to implement innovative and bold measures to make public service more efficient and accountable.”

“With a track record of excellence in both the private and public sectors, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demonstrated a deep understanding of the challenges facing our nation and the urgency of finding lasting solutions to them.”

I am particularly impressed with the President’s commitment to transparency, due process, and meritocracy, which are vital ingredients for a modern and effective public service. I am confident that with the right policies, strategies, and leadership, President Tinubu’s administration will transform our public service into a world-class institution that delivers quality service to citizens and enhances our national competitiveness.”

Speaking on the role of public servant, the former Nigerian Ambassador to Republic of Benin said “Public Service plays a crucial role in making a state tangible entity that people intereact with in regular basis wether directly or indirectly “.

As a a retired military officer and citizen. I believe that the public service is responsible for delivering essential services and supporting the needs of the state and its people”. This belief stems from my understanding that the public service is a fundamental institution that is designed to serve the interest of the public. Through efficient and effective public service delivery, we can build stronger and more resilient communities, foster economic growth, and promote social cohesion.

Buratai who also noted that a well functioning public service helps to build trust in government and promote social cohesion which is essential for maintaining peace and security however advise that the governments should prioritize recruitment, and training of competent public servants and provide them with the necessary resources and support to carry on their duties effectively.

The Chairman of the event Dr Mike Okiro a former Inspector General of Police in Nigeria, who was represented by DCP Adejobi Akinade in his brief remark urged members of the public to coperate with security agencies in their fight against insurgency and all sorts of anti society vices.

The National President of UUIA earlier in his speech said the choice of Lt Gen Buratai as guest lecturer and the topic is reinforced by their belief that there is a strong connection between good public service delivery and national security.

The event which was attended by Traditional rulers including Olowu of Owu Kuta Oba Hammed Oyelude Makama, Okere of Saki, Oba Khalid Adebisi, other Royal Fathers both from the Northern part of the Country and the Southwest, the Representatives of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, representatives of University of Ibadan VC, the Vice Chancellor of the Nigeran Army University Biu, cross array of Serving and Retired Military Personnels, captains of Industries, the academic community and others. The event was climaxed with presentation of award and Honourary membership emblem of the University of Ibadan Alumni association to Ambassador Tukur Yusufu Buratai.

Effective Public Service Is Essential For peace and Security Says Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Yusufu Buratai has reiterated that public service is a crucial aspect of national security.

Buratai in his paper presented at the 2nd stanza 2023 public lecture organized by the Alumni Association of the University of Ibadan on Friday, November 3rd, 2023 titled Public service and the imperative for National Security in Nigeria, maintained that it is imperative that government invest in, and maintains a competent Public Service to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

According to him, public servants are responsible for implementing policies and programs that promote peace and stability as well as for delivering essential services such as healthcare, education and infrastructure, and maintaining law and order which are vital to the well-being of the population.

Buratai also opined that the insecurity being faced in the country since 2009 was the creation of the Political class.

He maintained that political interference in military affairs can arise when politicians attempt to influence or control military decisions for their own political gains. This is capable of compromising service personnel, who are also public servants, thereby eroding public service.

“My colleagues and I faced the most political interference during our time. This interference often stems from a lack of understanding of the complexities of military operations, strategy, and the unique challenges faced by military leaders. When politicians impose their own or attemp to micromanage military affairs, it can undermine the effectiveness and autonomy of military leaders.”

Furthermore, political interference can erode the morale and trust within military ranks. When military leaders are constantly subjected to political pressures and demands that do not align with military expertise, it can create a sense of disillusionment among the troops. This can negatively impact their motivation, discipline, and overall effectiveness in carrying out their duties ”

During my tenure, I encountered a significant amount of interference from politicians and armchair critics who seemed to believe that the Commander- in-Chief lacked the necessary expertise to fulfill his duties. This unnecessary often hindered the smooth operation of military affairs and impeded the effective execution of plans”

Despite my extensive experience and dedication to my duties, the constant skepticism and second guessing by those outside the military sphere added an unwarranted layer of complexity to the decision making process This interference while well-intentioned in some cases, ultimately created a challenging environment for me.

Speaking on the calls for the sack of the then Service Chiefs, by the Ninth National Assembly, Buratai said their call was a call to derail the democracy by the military.

‘It is essential for civil authorities to have oversight and democratic control over the military in a democracy, however, those in civil governance should respect the expertise and professionalism of military leaders. There is the need to strike a healthy balance. A healthy civil-military relationship requires mutual trust, respect, and open communication. Politicians should rely on the advice and expertise of military leaders in matters of defense and security rather than playing to the gallery or politicizing national security. He concluded

Unity Bank Records N38.2 Billion Gross Earnings in Q3’23

Retail lender, Unity Bank Plc has recorded gross earnings of N38 billion for the nine-month period ended September 30, 2023, with customer deposits appreciating by 5% to N344.4 billion within the period, indicating business growth and customer confidence in the Bank.

A review of the lender’s unaudited nine-month results released to the Nigerian Exchange Group Limited showed that the Bank continued to maintain its expansionary and customer-centric model with total loans and advances rising to N222.8 billion, even as interest and similar income stood at N33 billion, which underscores the Bank’s strategic focus to reinvigorate and sustain asset creation that will deliver returns to shareholders.

Other key highlights of the 9-month financials include the total assets which stood at N423.4 billion; net fee and income commission, N4.4 billion within the period. However, the recent FX regulation impacted the Bank’s bottom line, which can be reversed as the Naira appreciates.

Commenting on the result, the Managing Director/CEO of Unity Bank Plc, Mrs. Tomi Somefun said that the Bank is focusing on its efforts to recapitalize the institution, aggressively drive asset creation, innovate with products to compete favourably in new markets and relentlessly drive the pursuit of digital Banking innovation in order to shake off and completely reverse negative positions.

She stated that despite the tough operating environment, the deposit position continues to witness steady appreciation, which supports the business as the Bank drives initiatives to ramp up transactions as part of its strategy for the short and medium term.

“This also means that the Bank enjoys market confidence, which will enable the institution to thrive better in the months ahead with increased business conversion, profitability and growth needed to achieve sustainable returns,” she said.

Added to the above, Somefun also stated that “the Bank is seeing encouraging uptake in its digital Banking services and with expansion envisaged in the pursuit of enhanced retail franchise, fintech partnership, consumer banking and other innovative retail loans as well as diversification of portfolio investment, the outlook remains one of optimism’’.

Analysts expressed confidence that re-engaging the market in the short and medium term by deepening the retail end as part of the business strategy will drive more income streams to boost both market share and financial position in the days ahead.
